"Dear Greyhound Marching Family: The journey to Atlanta started a little over a year ago, and the kids finally took the field of the Georgia Dome and it was amazing to see! I'm so grateful to all who worked in so many different ways throughout this past year to make this trip a reality! It really was a team effort that got us there and back! Deepest thanks to so many caring people that made it happen -- our directors, Mr. Muse and Mr. Porter, trip chaperones, fundraising chairpersons, our trip treasurer and board treasurers, our web administrator/communicator, our trip photographer, volunteer notaries, uniform maintenance team members, luggage inspectors and bus loaders, trip t-shirt project coordinator, trip t-shirt company sponsor, CFA t-shirt project coordinator, "angels" who donated trip scholarships, and last year's board and this year's board especially both presidents. I'm grateful for parents who supported their child throughout the year and then gave them "wings" to explore and grow by letting them engage in a unique experience far from home. I'd also like to thank the students who participated and represented the Lyman Marching Greyhounds so well with their wonderful musicianship and outstanding behavior! Congratulations, Team Atlanta...very well done!!!"-- Mirtha Martinez, Proud Lyman Band Parent and Trip Organizer
"This trip was a wonderful experience for all and really raises the bar for what Lyman should strive to accomplish next! My personal thanks to Mirtha Martinez for her outstanding leadership throughout the entire process. Also, we need to recognize all the chaperones, our directors, Martin, and all the parents who were so supportive throughout the whole process. Lyman rocks!" - Mike K. (parent and web guy)
"The Chick-Fil-A Bowl was a very exciting memory. Despite the coldness, and all the walking, I wouldn't mind doing it again, and I sure hope we can!" - Brittany L. (student)

I've uploaded several more videos (including 1 minute from a certain TV network). There will be many more photos from Martin and Vicky in the next few days. We know that lot's of you had cameras...send your candids in to Mike at admin@lymanband.com .
Updated 8:00 PM
The crew is continuing on their journey home. As of a few minutes ago, they were making a quick stop close to the GA/FL border.
Right now we're working on adding some more videos from the trip to the website. Despite the fact that ESPN confused everyone with their juggling of games, by the 2nd quarter they were on. And as luck would have it, several of our Greyhounds could be seen during the halftime!
Updated 1:15 AM
Happy New Years! We'll have a full update....yawn...in the morning. But I wanted to post a quick messgae to let everyone know that the Greyhounds were awesome.

We're back to a blusterly day here in Atlanta and the wet weather is forcing us to be a little flexible in our itinerary today.
Today started off with a fun tour of Coca-Cola. This was an interesting attraction where we were treated to a variety of presentations, movies (even a 4-D type ala Disney), and everyone's favorite...an area where you can sample Coke products from around the world. The group spent a nice amount of time on the tour.
Next up was lunch at The Varisty, an Atlanta institution. Hot dogs, chili-dogs, burgers, onion rings....."What'll ya have...what'll ya have?" Since it was a game day for the Atlanta Falcons, the place was packed. Of course there's also a growing number of Clemson and Auburn fans coming into the city and you can see the jersey's everywhere. So you can sense a growing buzz in the city.
Tonight the kids go to their banquet.
Please note, I'm battling the website with some issues....if you want to see the latest photos from today (Sunday), click here: We're back to a blusterly day here in Atlanta and the wet weather is forcing us to be a little flexible in our itinerary today.

Updated 11:10 PM (additional info added from Vicky R.):
The weather was beautiful today in Atlanta, perfect for the tour of CNN and the mass band rehearsal. That rehearsal went quickly as everyone seemed to be in synch and ready to hit the Georgia Dome. There will be about 800 kids on the field at the CFA Bowl. At the rehearsal today, the conductor, an Emeritus Professor at University of Illinois (also Director of the CFA Bowl massed bands for the past 18 years) was very happy with the rehearsal and the kids were let go an hour early. The level of musicianship amoungst all the schools was impressive.
The Lyman Greyhounds rocked Georgia State. We have some videos that we're sure you'll enjoy and lot's of great photos. Though Georgia lost the game, the Greyhounds provided a great level of excitement to the auditorium. Also in attendence at the game were members of the Lyman basketball team...completely by accident, they are playing in a tournament in the area (they are in the crowd shots).
My Cory Francis (striped tie), the Music Director at GSU was VERY complimentary about our group. It was the first time they’ve ever had a high school band play at GSU and they said we are welcome back to play at any time. Cory told the kids he’s on MySpace and on Facebook and encouraged the kids to keep in touch with him. He also has a brother in Orlando, so we gave him an open invitation to visit us at any time.
They bought 60 (!) pizzas for the band after the game and are also giving the band a $250 honorarium for playing.
The day started off on a sad note as one student came down with the chicken pox and unfortunately had to leave the group and return home along with his mom. Her day and nightime groups were re-assigned to other chaperones without any problem. We all wish the student a speedy recovery.
Tomorrow we start off with a visit to Coke, a visit to the zoo and then a their awards banquet.

Updated 10:00 PM:
Received some great photos from Martin Schiff and Vicky Rochford..they're now available online. Vicky reports that, "Hard Rock was fun. There was a lot of group participation when the "YMCA" video came on, and some kids "Got Jiggy" with the Will Smith video. We're at the hotel and all settled in our rooms. Door taping at 10!"
Updated 7:15 PM:
The troops had a nice dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, but the weather (64 degrees and humid) has forced the outdoor skating rink to close. They're spending the free time with their chaperones exploring Centennial Olympic Park area (holiday lights) and will be heading to the hotel at 8:00PM (which is a good thing because they have a wake-up call at 6:00 AM for breakfast). Tomorrow they will be touring CNN, rehearsing with the mass band, late lunch at The Old Spaghetti Factory and then over to Georgia State for the basketball game.
Updated 5:00 PM:
Some rain and even some thunder have put a little damper on day. The students just visited the Underground and are now heading over to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner.
Updated 1:15 PM:
The group made another stop for the students to stretch their legs, grab a snack, and "take care of business." A Lyman alumni from the area saw their shirts and came over to talk to the students about their trip and if so-and-so is still teaching at the school. It's great that they're seeing yet another example of Lyman pride and its far reach.
They're about 1/2 hour outside of Atlanta and the hotel has already been in contact with the group to assure them that the rooms are set up and that they're ready to help with the unloading.
Updated 9:50 AM:
After a quiet morning with most of the students sleeping, the crew has reached the Georgia border and made a pit-stop at McDonalds/Chick-Fil-A for a little breakfast.
Updated 8:00 AM:
At 5:15 AM, the buses were rolling and the Greyhounds were finally on their way to Atlanta! (Big sigh of relief from Mirtha)
A big thank you to all the parents and students for being at the school on time and ready to go! Also, kudos to Luz Paez and her husband for their great job in loading luggage onto the bus. We have some photos from this morning which you'll want to check out and more will be added from the day's activities as they become available. Also, we have the Final Itinerary and Travel Info Packet available for download. After they arrive in Atlanta, the Greyhounds have a busy schedule today:
- Hotel check-in
- Some time at Underground Atlanta
- Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe
- Skating at Olympic Centennial Park.
A busy, but fun day!
Note: We had a very special surprise during the rehearsal on Thursday...but we're going to hold off and will make a special announcement after the trip.

Thursday was a busy evening with one final rehearsal, dropping off of luggage (we must highlight Gabby's - click here - there's maybe a kitchen sink in there), prepping the uniforms (along with some last minute repairs), meeting the chaperones,...you could really sense the excitement as the students were realizing that they were going to be leaving soon.
The students also received their trip t-shirts along with a second custom t-shirt provided by Chick-Fil-A.
Pictures are posted from Thursday evening - click here.

Please read the following carefully. On Thursday evening we have a lot to accomplish in preparation for an efficient departure process on Friday morning. Thank you in advance for your patience as we work to have a smooth departure....please read the following carefully.
- From 5:00PM to 7:00PM we have a special rehearsal for our students. They should be prepared to run through all of their material for the performances.
- Luggage and instrument cases that they will be bringing should be brought in for inspection during the rehearsal. We will be ready to accept the luggage at 5:00 and will continue up through the end of the rehearsal. After inspection, the luggage will be secured at the school until departure on Friday morning. We'll search their carry on items on Friday morning. Please review packing notes here:Document Archived
Remember that students must pack a complete uniform including gauntlets, hat with a string, shoes, black socks, and this year's "Last Gangster" t-shirt.
If anyone has a repair needed, have them report to Pat Gosha who will be working on any last minute repairs on jackets and pants. Any parent wishing to help with repairs, please see Pat during the inspection session.
- Starting at 7:00PM, the day chaperones will all be at the band room ready to meet with parents and students concerning any special needs. In particular, parents should hand medicines to their child's chaperone as
follows:
A. Medication should have a prescription label with the following:
- Student's name
- A current date
B. Each medicine bottle should have only enough medication for the trip.
C. All bottles should be in a zip-locked baggie with the student's and chaperone's names on the outside. (Chaperones will have zip-locked baggies)
D. A form with the following info should be included inside each baggie:
(copy of form: Document Archived
- Student's Name
- Parent Name and Contact Information
- Name of medicine
- Dosage and frequency
- Taken with meal or on an empty stomach?
- Any other info to note
-Band Jackets: Freshmen and anyone else who ordered a band jacket will be able to pick them up on Thursday, December 27, at 7:00 p.m. in the band room.
-Trip T-Shirts: Chaperones will be distributing trip t-shirts to their day-group participants. Size exchanges are not possible due to the limited amount of shirts ordered.
Prior to Thursday evening, please contact our trip coordinator, Mirtha Martinez (bowltrip@lymanband.com with any questions. As you can imagine, we'll be pretty busy on Thursday evening so its best to try and take care of any concerns in advance.
We need for all students and chaperones to be at the school promptly at 4:00 AM on Friday for final departure preparations. We have a busy itinerary on Friday and that will require that we leave promptly at 5:00AM. Please be considerate of your fellow Greyhounds and have those alarm clocks set appropriately.
